Violence in Video Games (The “ban violence” Rant)

Posted by on August 28, 2007

Adults will always argue about this, they think that violence in games equal violent children.

They recommend educational games instead, what they don’t see (because they never experienced a game at all) is that “violent” games help kids focus their anger, release it without harming anyone…

I put on the TV and what do I see.. an interview to a journalist, who speaks about how violent games should be banished, and educational games should be published instead (games specifically related to mathematics, language learning, etc).

Too bad I don’t know this woman’s name, but I’ll still leave her a message: Before you speak shit about anything, learn the subject.

Let me tell you something: kids are all day long learning, the last thing they’ll want is to keep on learning once they’re at home.

Lots of things happen in class-rooms and during break-time, most kids develop huge anger from school, and their only way to get that out is with, you’ve guessed it: “violent games”.

Common misconceptions / myths:

  • Kids become violent by playing this games
    • That’s bull, the opposite happens in reality.
  • Kids learn violence from video games
    • I’m sure they’ve learn much more violence from your past divorce, the streets or even at school.
  • Kids don’t learn from video games
    • They do, but that doesn’t mean your kid would get any better at college, even if the games were about quantum physics.

Violence is something some people is born with, violence and the urge to kill (which somehow is always correlated with violent games by those who never played such titles) is reflected by their brain condition – yes, murderers do show a different brain pattern than “normal” people do. Just for your information, you can learn how to kill – That doesn’t mean you’ll apply it right ahead with your best friend, tomorrow morning. The moment you see that happening, then you should think about a shrink. Don’t even think about blaming the game developers: blame yourself.

Violence, something we all know from instinct – Without it, we wouldn’t be here.

Let’s recap a little bit, shall we:
The purpose of video games is to ENTERTAIN – And for that, you must catch the client’s attention, by giving them what they SEEK for – NOT what you “THINK” It’s good for them, they buy it – you sell it, if you’ll try and impose your point of view, you wont do well in business – And if you’re in national TV (with those extra pounds of yours, shame on you for not taking care of your body) trying to make a point, saying violent games should be banished and educational games should be developed instead: you should shut up and do your own life.

In case this woman didn’t know, educational games do exist. It just happens that, it’s another market.

I just pity this people, they think they’re better than anyone, they think they can impose their views on everyone – They think they’ve got what it takes… But yet, they haven’t changed a thing, perhaps that tells you something?.

I’ll leave it at there, but to make it clear: This is not my point of view, it’s what everyone thinks and knows: Without violence, there wouldn’t be life. Just because a game is related to violence, doesn’t mean your kid will become a murderer – And in case you don’t approve this games, don’t let your kids play them – It’s that simple.

(Yes, just when you thought it was all over, people continue to argue about this…)
